VIENTIANE, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Lao Ministry of Public Security, along with key stakeholders, held a technical meeting to address the drug problem in Laos, which the government has identified as a top national priority.
According to a report by Lao Security News on Saturday, the meeting, which focused on addressing the country's drug challenges, was held in Lao capital Vientiane on Thursday.
The meeting highlighted the Lao government's commitment to combating drug-related issues, reaffirming drug control as a top national priority.
Participants acknowledged that, despite ongoing efforts, the global spread of drug production, trafficking, and abuse continues to pose serious threats to public health, youth, national security, and sustainable development.
The growing connection between drugs, crime, and terrorism has become a serious concern, as drug-related offenses are increasingly linked to other criminal activities such as cybercrime, money laundering, and human trafficking, said the report.
Addressing these complex and interrelated issues requires strong cooperation and mutual support, as no single individual or country can tackle the drug problem alone, it added.
The meeting reviewed the progress and challenges in implementing the National Agenda on Drug Abuse. It also introduced priority strategies to be included in the 10th five-year national socio-economic development plan for 2026-2030.
Additionally, participants discussed ways to enhance coordination and support for future drug control initiatives. ■
